Show Notes

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) is the central focus of this opening episode of The Silenced Voices of MST. Rachelle Smith explains why she created the podcast and how the military’s culture of silence continues to harm survivors. She introduces the series as a space for truth-telling and reform, anchored in community and shared accountability. Listeners learn that MST is not an isolated problem but a systemic failure that persists through denial and institutional self-protection.

Rachelle outlines the goals of the podcast: to educate, to connect survivors with resources, and to expose how power structures allow abuse to continue. Each episode will feature firsthand accounts from survivors, conversations with advocates and experts, and clear steps for listeners who want to push for policy change. The tone is direct, honest, and trauma-informed. Rachelle also discusses the importance of breaking the stigma that isolates survivors. She encourages listeners to join the movement through The Advocates of MST Facebook community and by using available toolkits to contact lawmakers and apply for VA disability support.

0:50 future this is silence voices stories of 0:55 MST hello everyone this is Rachel Smith 0:59 The Host of Silence voices stories of 1:02 MST this is our inaugural episode I'm so 1:06 excited to be here it has been quite the 1:09 ride to get this podcast up and running 1:13 but here we are I do want to say a huge 1:16 huge thank you to our participants 1:19 stepping forward to share the stories of 1:23 just the most awful moments of their 1:25 lives their courage their resilience 1:29 their Grit 1:30 just to sit with me and also talk about 1:34 their walk into healing and into hope 1:38 has been enough to bring me to tears 1:41 sometimes and if there's a moment in 1:44 your day where you can stop and think 1:46 about each of these survivors and what 1:48 they went through and then also sharing 1:52 their stories again please send them 1:54 some positive energy there's also a way 1:57 to reach out on our website silence 1:59 voice voices 2:07 mst.org out these letters they're called 2:10 salute to survivors and the purpose of 2:13 them is to let our guests know that 2:15 their words weren't unheard their 2:17 stories are helping others feel seen and 2:20 heard and the letters are here to let 2:23 each of us know that we're here to 2:25 support each other no one is alone in 2:28 MST even though it feels like like it I 2:30 also would like to put a Content warning 2:34 out there before we dive in our 2:37 discussions can be very triggering to 2:39 some listeners I ask each of the guests 2:42 to share their experiences with MST to 2:46 their level of comfort now that means 2:49 that their level of comfort might not be 2:52 your level of comfort so I encourage you 2:56 if a story does start to raise your 2:58 anxiety or trigger you in any sort of 3:01 way please pause the episode practice 3:04 some kind of self-care we also have 3:08 numerous resources in the show notes so 3:11 if you need to call for example the 3:13 Veterans Crisis Line please call and if 3:17 you feel that you may harm yourself or 3:20 another person please call 911 or go to 3:23 an emergency room right away we will be 3:27 addressing many sensitive topics I 3:30 related to MST so listener discretion is 3:34 advised today is the introduction to the 3:37 show yes but I would love to get your 3:40 feedback so that we can make this 3:42 podcast the best that it can be there is 3:44 a survey that is in the show notes it's 3:47 also available on the website so yes I 3:50 would just love to get your feedback so 3:52 that we can kind of shape the podcast 3:54 into something that is a great resource 3:57 for all that choose to listen whether 3:59 you're a survivor of MST or maybe you're Why the podcast was created 4:02 a family member or friend of someone 4:05 that is in that situation currently or 4:07 has been in the past and also if you are 4:11 an employee or founder of an 4:14 organization that assist survivors of 4:17 MST or if you're a mental health 4:19 practitioner or work in the social work 4:21 field I would love to have you on the 4:23 podcast just so that we can help explain 4:26 the science and psychology behind sexual 4:30 trauma and how it doesn't affect just 4:33 one person it affects everyone so I 4:36 started this podcast because I truly 4:39 believe in the power of stories and the 4:43 goal of this podcast is to empower MST 4:46 survivors as well as advocate for a 4:48 safer military environment and create 4:52 awareness about this 4:53 issue what led to me starting it was 4:57 actually seeing multiple threads on 5:00 Reddit it was on a female centered 5:03 subreddit and I would see that maybe 5:06 every month or two months or so that a 5:10 young woman would share a post saying 5:12 that a recruiter might have come by the 5:14 school or they had just done a job fair 5:17 and there were several recruiters there 5:19 from each of the services and she would 5:22 ask what's your opinion I'm kind of Scope and pervasiveness of MST 5:25 interested in joining I either want to 5:28 have the money for college or I just 5:30 want to get out of my town or you know 5:33 similar stories that we all have and 5:36 what was intriguing to me and also very 5:39 saddening was there would be comment 5:42 after comment after comment like raging 5:44 into the thousands of people pouring 5:47 their hearts out of these just 5:51 completely traumatic and awful MST 5:54 stories and it went from the range of 5:58 being harassed daily at work or in the 6:01 field or on deployment or it went on to 6:05 stories of rape stalking attempted 6:09 murder and all sorts of stories and then 6:12 of course we all have seen the stories 6:14 that have made national news but I think 6:17 what really impacted me was even as a 6:21 Survivor I did not know that there were 6:25 this many people impacted by this and a 6:28 lot of the commenters weren't just 6:30 female there were commenters that were 6:32 male there were commenters that have 6:35 since begun to transition after they 6:37 left the military and there were 6:40 commenters that there're somewhere in 6:42 the the non-binary but all that I could 6:45 see was that it affected so many people 6:48 of varying ages from all the services in 6:53 Duty stations all around the world and 6:55 also on ships with the Navy and the 6:58 Coast Guard yes we do see what reaches 7:02 national news but there is stuff 7:04 happening daily to service members 7:08 around the world and personally when I 7:10 joined the military I had you know the 7:13 expectation of danger from deployment 7:16 not my fellow brothers and sisters in 7:19 uniform and I don't think that anyone 7:22 should feel in danger they're supposed 7:24 to be our family in service one of the 7:27 goals is is just sharing the 7:29 pervasiveness of it so that people 7:31 understand this isn't just a a one-off 7:34 problem this is something that is 7:36 systemic another point of this podcast Creating awareness and driving change 7:39 is to eventually raise money so that 7:41 veterans can get Specialized Care um I 7:45 know my experience isn't Universal but I 7:50 have been treated awfully at the VA and 7:53 I don't think it's entirely the VA 7:56 staff's fault there's just not enough 7:58 people and and more and more people are 8:00 now starting to come forward with with 8:02 MST trauma related uh symptoms and I 8:06 just from my experience they were not 8:08 equipped so I would like to help people 8:10 get Specialized Care so that they can 8:13 get their lives back and you know get 8:15 their strength and power back and and 8:17 move forward and that is such a hurdle 8:20 with this kind of trauma is is being 8:23 able to feel safe within your own body 8:26 and be able to continue with your life 8:29 and not feel like this could happen to 8:31 you again at any 8:33 moment again our ultimate goal is to 8:36 create a platform for survivors 8:39 Advocates clinicians and supportive 8:41 organizations so that we can share 8:43 resources support one another and 8:46 ultimately Drive change with that said 8:49 if you'd like to participate in the 8:51 podcast or know of an organization that 8:54 we should highlight please reach out to 8:56 us via email or social media the email 8:59 address address is info@ silen voices 9:03 m.com I also thought that it would be 9:06 prudent for me to add just some 9:08 definitions and facts and figures about 9:11 MST so that some of our listeners who 9:13 may not be familiar with what MST covers 9:18 you can find out now um and all this 9:20 information is coming from the DAV 9:23 Disabled American Veterans website so 9:26 military sexual trauma MST refers to a Definition and facts about MST 9:29 service members experience with sexual 9:31 assault or sexual harassment occurring 9:33 at any point during his or her military 9:35 service the following are all examples 9:38 forced or coerced sexual 9:41 encounters sexual encounters perpetrated 9:43 while a person is unwilling or unable to 9:45 give consent inappropriate sexual jokes 9:48 or lwd remarks unwanted physical contact 9:51 that makes you uncomfortable repeated 9:53 sexual advances offers of something in 9:56 exchange for sexual favors it's 9:59 estimated that 1 in three female 10:01 veterans and 1 in 100 male veterans in 10:03 the VA Health Care System reported 10:06 experiencing MST it's also important to 10:09 note that by percentage women are at 10:11 greater risk but nearly 40% of veterans 10:14 who disclose MST to the VA are men the 10:17 symptoms associated with MST are 10:20 post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD and 10:23 other psychological health issues sexual 10:26 assault survivors in both the military 10:28 and civilian populations show a higher 10:31 lifetime rate of PTSD for both men 65% 10:35 and women 49 and a half% VA medical 10:39 record data indicates that in addition 10:41 to PTSD the diagnoses most frequently 10:44 associated with MST among users of VA 10:47 Healthcare are depression and other mood 10:50 disorders and substance abuse disorders 10:52 you also can experience difficulty with 10:55 relationships and social functioning 10:57 veterans who have experienced MS May 10:59 report difficulties with interpersonal 11:02 relationships in some cases the abuse 11:04 triggers trust issues problems engaging 11:07 in social activities and possible 11:09 difficulties with sexual dysfunction 11:11 it's also common to experience emotional 11:13 challenges with guilt shame and anger 11:16 over the trauma many survivors also 11:19 report difficulties finding or 11:21 maintaining work after their military 11:23 service the physical health problems 11:26 associated with MST are sexual 11:29 difficulties chronic pain weight or 11:32 eating problems gastrointestinal 11:34 problems and additionally they may 11:37 experience difficulty with attention 11:39 concentration and memory and have 11:41 trouble staying focused or frequently 11:43 finding their mind wandering another is 11:45 substance abuse which is drug and or 11:49 alcohol abuse and that has a higher 11:51 correlation among sexual assault 11:53 survivors than among nonvictims Studies 11:57 have found drug use including marijuana 11:59 cocaine and other illicit substances is 12:01 up to 10 times as high for victims of 12:04 sexual assault there is also a strong 12:07 association with MST survivors in 12:09 developing certain specific medical 12:11 conditions such as obesity or weight 12:14 loss chronic pulmonary disease liver 12:16 disease and hypothyroidism and mental 12:19 health conditions such as bipolar 12:21 disorders schizophrenia eating disorders 12:24 and post-traumatic stress disorder when 12:27 you listen to the guess on their pilot 12:30 episodes I challenge you to keep this 12:32 list in mind and then listen to all of 12:35 these experiences you would be troubled 12:38 to not find that they're experiencing 12:40 all of these things we've covered 12:42 everything in our interviews from wak G 12:44 to anger to guilt to not wanting to go 12:47 to the gym to substance abuse to 12:49 alcoholism it's all in there so these 12:53 symptoms are very real and even if 12:56 someone does not come forward about what 12:58 what has happened to them they can still 13:00 suffer from all of this so if you notice 13:03 someone in your life that has 13:05 drastically had a personality change and 13:07 they are falling into these behaviors 13:10 keep an eye on them maybe ask if 13:11 everything is okay and even if they 13:13 don't want to talk just let them know 13:15 that you're ready to listen when they're 13:17 ready to 13:19 talk so in the upcoming episodes you can Expectations for future episodes 13:23 expect some thought-provoking 13:26 discussions there are actually quite a 13:28 few moments where my guests surprise 13:31 themselves with with realizations that 13:33 they make while speaking and then you're 13:36 also going to hear such 13:39 inspiration there are stories here where 13:41 people have been able to turn their 13:43 trauma into something miraculous and 13:47 that is why we're here is to let people 13:49 know that they're not alone and this is 13:51 not the 13:52 end thank you again for listening to 13:56 this podcast sharing these episodes 13:58 sharing our
